Progress report for the Saturday February 12, 2022 GGRM workday at Schellville

The Saturday February 12, 2022 GGRM workday was focused on the following items at the Victory Station Yard and the Sonoma Rail storage site at Schellville.

The primary emphasis was on the tasks required to get the GGRM’s passenger cars ready for operation. In addition, the 92-day inspection of GP9 #3194 was also started.

Thanks go out to the GGRM volunteers listed below who helped make the February 12th Schellville workday very productive:

David Waterman, Nico Dacong, Steve Coon, Steve Rusconi, Seth Adams, Burr Wilson, and Peter Schulze.

Below is the progress report for the Saturday’s February 12, 2022 workday.

At the Victory Station Yard worksite:

1.           The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been set at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done, Jim Prettyleaf

2.           Continue working to install the new control system for the #2979 Tavern Car’s air conditioning and heating systems.  Thanks to lots of hard work completed by Seth Adams and help provided by other GGRM volunteers the new heating and air conditioning controller has been installed and is working.  This project is roughly 90% completed and is expected to move closer to 100% during the upcoming February 26, 2022 workday.

3.           Weather permitting continue stripping, repairing, and painting the roof of the #141 Oakland Business Car.  Nico Dacong slaved away all day to move this project forward, David Waterman, and Steve Coon also pitched in to work on Oakland’s roof when they were not working on other projects.

4.           Continue the electrical wiring installations that are needed to get the #141 Oakland Business Car running again.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

5.           Inspect the copper air conditioning plumbing currently installed in the #141 Oakland and create a plan for completing the installation of the new Northwest Rail Electric air conditioning system.  Seth Adams, Steve Rusconi, Jim Prettyleaf and Tim Dulin inspected the copper plumbing for Oakland’s air conditioning.  Unfortunately, this inspection revealed that the existing copper pipes were connected together using soft solder instead of silver solder.

6.           Water softener vessels have been picked up from Evoqua in Milpitas and delivered to Schellville.  Make a list of the hoses and adapters required to connect the fire hoses, resin trap and the water meter.  Owners Jim Prettyleaf and Steve Rusconi and David Waterman.  A plan was developed for assembling the water input strainer and the resin trap, check valve, and water meter that connect to the Evoqua water softener on to heavy duty field portable wagons that Steve Rusconi will be donating to the GGRM.

7.           The fresh 92 - day inspection of GP9 #3194 is 70% complete but GGRM needs to finish the remaining 30% of the required inspections and tests.  The locomotive’s door mounted air intake filters were filthy and all needed to be replaced.  Thanks go to Burr Wilson, Steve Coon and David Waterman for moving the 92 – day inspection to 88% completion, we are hoping to complete this project during the upcoming February 19, 2022 Schellville workday.

8.           Continue sorting out and reorganizing the contents of the #6752 Diesel Shop Car and the #5131 Steam Shop Car prior to the start of operations.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

9.           The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been taken down at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done, Jim Prettyleaf

At the Sonoma Rail worksite in Schellville:

1.           Air up #3722 and test the repaired doorway occupied sensor switch for the pneumatically operated door located at the south end of the car.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

2.           Leaks in #3720’s have been found and repaired, but still need to locate and repair #3722’s water leaks.  Steve Rusconi and David Waterman prepared the #3722 water leak testing.

3.           Install the good sink cannibalized from #3714 into #3722’s restroom.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

4.           Continue vacuuming and washing seats and mopping the floors of the #3720 and the #3722 cars.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

5.           Inspect and clean the window shades in the #3722 and #3720 gallery cars.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

6.           Make a list showing the location and number of window shades that will require replacement.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

7.           Continue the work needed to select the gallery car with the least number of problems and concentrate on bringing #3720 or #3722 up to operational status.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.

8.           Inspect #3720 and #3722 and make a list of any parts that are missing, broken or inoperable.  No action taken during the Feb 12, 2022 workday.
