Progress Report Saturday October 30, 2021East Sunol Edition

Working at sites far removed from our home-base at Schellville are scary events that require loads of advanced planning.  If one or more small mistakes are made in the planning process the remote workday can easily turn into a disaster where nothing gets done due to missing tools or parts.  Yesterday’s remote workday at the East Sunol Yards was a stunning success because everything kept falling into place enabling a tremendous amount of work to be completed by the GGRM’s volunteers.

I want to thank the following GGRM volunteers for supplying the tools, the parts and the labor resources needed to prepare the museum’s F7A locomotives and Harriman era suburban coaches for movement to Sonoma County.

Severn Edmonds, Scott Vogel, Nico Dacong, David Waterman, Jay King, and Steve Rusconi.

Progress made during the October 30, 2021 workday at the East Sunol Yard of the Niles Canyon Railway.

1.           Verify correct dead in train response of the airbrakes on the #6378 and #6380 F7A locomotives.  Completed by Severn Edmonds and Scott Vogel.

2.           Adjust the brake linkage of the #6378 and #6380 F7A locomotives to achieve the correct brake cylinder travel.  Completed by Severn Edmonds and Scott Vogel.

3.           Air up and reverify the location of the known brake pipe leaks on the #2097, #2143 and #2156 suburban coaches.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf.

4.           Start repairing all of the identified brake pipe leaks on the suburban coaches.  Completed by Nico Dacong, David Waterman, Jay King, Steve Rusconi and Jim Prettyleaf.

5.           Adjust the brake linkages of the suburban coaches to achieve the correct brake cylinder travel.  No action taken during the Oct 30th workday.

Special thanks go to the following individuals who made the October 30th East Sunol Yards workday successful.
  • Severn Edmonds for renting and transporting the one lung gas engine powered wheelbarrow air compressor that was used for the air brake testing.
  • Steve Rusconi for bringing a large supply of unions and pipe fittings.
  • To the entire GGRM volunteer crew that dug into and completed a large number of test and repairs.
If the second East Sunol Yards workday scheduled for Saturday November 6th is as successful as the first workday I am hoping that the third Sunol workday that was scheduled for November 13th may not be necessary.

Regards,

Jim Prettyleaf
