Progress report for the Saturday August 27, 2022 GGRM workday at Schellville

The Saturday August 27, 2022 workday was focused on the GGRM passenger cars located at our museum’s storage sites at Schellville Junction.

 

The primary emphasis was on the tasks required to get the GGRM’s passenger cars ready for display during the September 4th and 5th 2022 Labor Day weekend open house.

Below is the progress report for the Saturday August 27 workday.

 

At the Victory Station Yard worksite:

1.              The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been set at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done Jim Prettyleaf.

2.              Do whatever is needed to get ready for the upcoming September 4the and September 5th open house at the Victory Station Yard.  Done by all hands.

3.              Install the rebuilt exterior windows on the south side of the #2979 Tavern Lounge Car.  Devised a technique for finding the location of the window frame mounting holes, then Installed 7 of the 8 external windows.  This task was 88%completed thanks to the diligent efforts of David Waterman, Nico Dacong, and Ted Davis with technical support and go-for duties completed by Jim Prettyleaf.  Need to install one more of the external windows while #2472 is boiling water during the next workday scheduled for Saturday September 3, 2022.

4.              Put off road diesel fuel in the tank for the #2979 Tavern Lounge Car.  Jim Prettyleaf purchased 20 gallons of off road diesel.  Ten gallons of extra fuel is on hand in the yellow fuel jugs and Jim Prettyleaf and Nico Dacong added 10 gallons to the roughly 20 gallons that was already in the tank for the #2979 Tavern Car’s gen-set.

5.              Prepare the #5901 RPO to function as the GGRM Gift Shop during the upcoming September 4th and September 5th open house at the Victory Station Yard.  Done by Manly Hyde.

6.              Start charging the batteries in the #3194 GP9 and #1487 F-M locomotives on the morning of August 27, 2022.  Steve Coon charged the batteries in the #3194 GP9 and then started and static load tested the GP9 and the #1487 Fairbanks-Morse locomotives. 

7.              Return the Alemite hard grease gun to Schellville.  Done Jim Prettyleaf. 

8.              Check existing Schellville stock of hard pin grease and soft grease for steam loco #2472 and make a list of what needs to be acquired.  David Waterman cleaned up the saddle bag located on the engineer’s side of #2472’s tender and worked with Steve Coon to verify that adequate supplies of hard and soft grease are on hand for the upcoming September 4th and 5th open house at Schellville.

9.              Check existing Schellville stock of steam cylinder oil and Journaltex and make a list of what needs to be replenished from supplies at Antioch.  David Waterman and Steve Coon verified that adequate amounts of steam cylinder oil and Journaltex are on hand at Schellville.

10.          Start washing the exterior of the GGRM’s rollingstock.  Steve Coon washed the #5901 UP RPO car, the #1487 Fairbanks-Morse locomotive, and three quarters of the #2979 Tavern Lounger Car.

11.          Defer all items related to the #141 Oakland Business Car until after the September 4the and September 5th open house at the Victory Station Yard.  No work was done on the #141 Oakland.

12.          Continue sorting out and reorganizing the contents of the #6752 Tool Car and the #5131 Steam Shop Car prior to the September 5th open house at the Victory Station Yard.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

At the Sonoma Rail worksite in Schellville:

1.             Determine what has suddenly gone wrong with the three-phase gen-set for the #3722 gallery car following the 6-hour load test that was completed during the August 13, 2022 Schellville workday.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

2.             Determine if the gen-set in the #3720 gallery car is or is not okay after completing the 6 hour load test that was done on August 13th.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

3.             Determine if it is possible to borrow seats from another gallery and reinstall the missing lower level seats at the south end of #3722.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

4.             Continue working on the air conditioning system of the #3722 gallery-car per the written plan submitted by Seth Adams.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

5.             Continue working to select the gallery car with the least number of problems and concentrate on bringing #3720 or #3722 up to operational status as quickly as possible.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

6.             Defer items 7 through 9 shown below until items 1 through 5 listed above have been adequately addressed or completed.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

7.             Complete additional troubleshooting to determine why the engine stop pushbuttons for the #3722 and #3720 gallery car gen-sets are not working correctly.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

8.             Inspect #3720 and #3722 and make a list of any parts that are missing, broken or inoperable.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

9.             Continue vacuuming and washing seats and mopping the floors of the #3720 and the #3722 cars.  No action taken during the August 27, 2022 workday.

 

Objectives for upcoming mid-week workdays at Schellville

1.           Determine what needs to be done and the cost of bringing the gallery car CO2 fire suppression systems back to operational status.  Inspection completed by Rich Cottle of Sciens Building Solutions and Jim Sweeney on August 8, 2022 revealed that the gallery car CO2 fire suppression systems are obsolete and beyond economical repair or replacement.  In addition, Mr. Cottle stated that he is not aware of any code requiring these CO2 fire suppression systems and recommended that they should be scrapped at the GGRM’s convenience.  If nothing new regarding these COsystems arises this item will be declared closed and deleted from future objectives lists and progress reports.

 

Ongoing Offsite Projects that Support Schellville Workday Objectives

1.           Repair or replace the wooden frames for the exterior windows of the #2979 Tavern Lounge Car.  On Tuesday August 16, 2022 the eight wooden frames that Scott Bowdish completed were handed over to David Waterman.

2.           Reassemble the polycarbonate glazing into the wooden frames that Scott Bowdish built mid-week so that these windows will be ready to reinstall during the August 20th Schellville workday.  Work was completed by David Waterman during the week that began on Monday August 15th so that assembled exterior windows for the #2979 Tavern Lounge Car could be delivered to Schellville in time for the August 20, 2022 workday.  The rebuilt window frames were painted by Tim Dulin and Jason Davis during the August 20, 2022 Schellville workday.

3.           Order the rubber seals required to install new glazing to replace broken side windows in the #3722 gallery car.  Done, window seals were ordered by Jim Prettyleaf on Tuesday August 16th.  The Trim-Lok part number LK1179 Window Seals and the Trim-Lok part number LK937 Locking Gasket Key material were received on Thursday August 19, 2022.  All of the Trim-Lok parts needed to install new side windows were stored in the #3722 gallery car during the August 20, 2022 Schellville workday.

4.           Order the polycarbonate glazing need to replace windows that are broken or fogged on the #3722.  In progress, polycarbonate glazing was ordered by Jim Prettyleaf on Wednesday August 17th and delivery has been promised by Port Plastics in

5.           Locate a supplier for 3-71 series Detroit Diesel engine rocker cover gaskets and hydraulic governor gaskets and seals to eliminate oil leaks on the #3722 gallery car’s gen - set.  New rocker cover gaskets and hydraulic governor gaskets were ordered by Jim Prettyleaf and were received by June 9th.  Jim Prettyleaf still owns the task to find a supplier for the hydraulic governor’s manual rack control plunger seals.

6.           Find and purchase a currently available functionally equivalent power contactor to replace the three-phase contactor that was cannibalized from #3714’s north end low range electric resistance heater.  In progress Seth Adams, and Jim Prettyleaf.

7.           Manufacture and install of replacements for the arm rests that have been cannibalized from #3714.  Work is in progress by Jay King.

8.           Repair the broken sink that was removed from #3722.  Owner Steve Rusconi.

 

Objectives that have been deferred until a future time.

1.           The restoration of the #3714 gallery car

 

The next regularly scheduled Schellville workday will be held on Saturday September 3, 2022.
