Progress report for the Saturday April 30, 2022 GGRM workday at Schellville, CA
The Saturday April 30, 2022 workday was focused on the GGRM passenger cars located at our museum’s storage sites at Schellville Junction.
The primary emphasis was on the tasks required to get two of the 145 seat bi-level gallery cars ready for operation.
Thanks go out to the GGRM volunteers listed below who helped make the April 30th Schellville workday productive:
Steve Coon, David Waterman Nico Dacong, and Jay King.
Below is the progress report for the Saturday April 30, 2022 workday.
At the Victory Station Yard worksite:
1. The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been set at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye. Done, Jim Prettyleaf
2. Weather permitting continue stripping, repairing, and painting the roof of the #141 Oakland Business Car. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
3. Fix any remaining water damage and prepare the dining room ceiling of the #141 Oakland Business Car for painting. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
4. Install the new copper pipes required for the #141 Oakland Business Car’s new Northwest Rail Electric air conditioning system. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
5. Continue the electrical wiring installations that are needed to get the #141 Oakland Business Car running again. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
6. Continue sorting out and reorganizing the contents of the #6752 Diesel Shop Car and the #5131 Steam Shop Car prior to the start of operations. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
7. Reinstall the radiator segment that was removed from Fairbanks-Morse #1487 to obtain a repair cost estimate. Steve Coon made new gaskets and reinstalled the missing radiator segment. Steve filled locomotive with water, tested to operating temperature and verified that the radiator fan and shutters work correctly and there are no leaks. The estimated cost to repair #1487’s radiator segments is roughly $1,000 each, five of the existing radiator segments are in marginal condition but fortunately none are leaking at this time.
8. The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been taken down at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye. Done, Jim Prettyleaf
At the Sonoma Rail worksite in Schellville:
1. Continue working on the air conditioning system of the #3722 gallery-car per the written plan submitted by Seth Adams. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
2. Measure the width of wheelchair access in #3722 gallery car. Done, by Jim Prettyleaf, the existing handicap access opening on the #3722 gallery car is 48 inches wide. To meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards door must have a clear width of not less than 32 inches. The next step will be to make a few safety hand rails and two more of the formed diamond plate inserts that Princess Cruise Lines provided with the #3722 gallery car.
3. Install and charge the new batteries purchased for the #3720 bi-level gallery-car. Done by Nico Dacong, Jay King, and Jim Prettyleaf.
4. Start installing new rubber seals on the end doors #3720 gallery-car. Done by David Waterman, Nico Dacong, and Jay King.
5. Inspect and clean all wiring connections and switch contacts for the gen-set start/stop controls that are located inside the switch lockers of the #3720 and #3722 gallery-cars. Done by David Waterman. After cleaning the contacts, the #3722 gallery car gen – set can always be started using the push button located in the switch locker cabinet, but correct functioning of the stop push button only works intermittently. After cleaning the start/stop push buttons for the #3720 gallery car gen – set and related power contactor connections located in the engine control locker the generator set inside #3720 can be reliably started but will not respond to the stop push button. More troubleshooting will be necessary and at least one new engine stop solenoid will need to be purchased.
6. Investigate what must be done to fix the leaky air pressure regulator located in the east side door engine compartment of the #3722 gallery car. Done by David Waterman.
7. Install the squirrel-cage fan that is missing from the #3722 gallery car’s gen-set. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
8. Continue testing and monitoring the operation of the #3722 gallery car’s gen-set to make certain the problem that was causing the erratic rpm and spontaneous shutdown has been eliminated. After cleaning more control system contacts the #3722 gallery car gen – set is now reliably running correctly and maintaining the right rpm and electrical power output. The next step will be to reinstall the squirrel cage fan that was missing from #3722’s gen – set.
9. Continue working to select the gallery car with the least number of problems and concentrate on bringing #3720 or #3722 up to operational status as quickly as possible. The #3722 gallery car continues to be the first choice for air conditioning system restoration.
10. Inspect #3720 and #3722 and make a list of any parts that are missing, broken or inoperable. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
11. Continue vacuuming and washing seats and mopping the floors of the #3720 and the #3722 cars. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
12. Inspection and cleaning of the window shades in the #3722 and #3720 gallery cars. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
13. Make a list showing the location and number of window shades that will require replacement. No action taken during the April 23, 2022 workday.
Ongoing Offsite Projects that Support Schellville Workday Objectives
- Locate a supplier for the Detroit Diesel OEM part # 23504197 engine shutdown solenoid and get one ordered. Jim Prettyleaf found an ebay source that will supply the part # 23504197 engine shutdown solenoid for $99.85, delivery is expected between May 5 and May 9 of 2022.
- Located a supplier for the 0.080” inch thick fabric backed rubber sheets need to make new sliding door boots. Found McMaster-Carr can supply 3/32” (0.094’) thick by 36” wide ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) sheets that can be cut into the 6” wide strips needed to make the new sliding door seals (boots). When using McMaster-Carr part number 8610K33 EPDM rubber sheets the estimated cost to replace the door seals for each gallery car will be roughly $182.
- Find and purchase a currently available functionally equivalent power contactor to replace the three-phase contactor that was cannibalized from #3714’s north end low range electric resistance heater. In progress Seth Adams, and Jim Prettyleaf.
- Manufacture and install of replacements for the arm rests that have been cannibalized from #3714. In progress by Jay King.
- Repair the broken sink that was removed from #3722. Owner Steve Rusconi.
Objectives that have been deferred until a future time.
- The restoration of the #3714 gallery car.
- Creation of a written record of the repairs needed for the #3720 and 3722 gallery car’s CO2 fire systems prior to a visit from AAA Fire Suppression Services.
- Prepare the gallery cars for painting.
