Progress report for Saturday December 11, 2021 GGRM workday

The December 11, 2021 GGRM Schellville workday was focused on the following items at the Victory Station Yard and the Sonoma Rail Incorporated storage site.

The GGRM’s locomotives have routinely been receiving the necessary levels of inspections and repairs, so the emphasis of Schellville workdays has been shifted to preparing the GGRM’s passenger cars for operation.

Thanks go out to the GGRM volunteers listed below who helped make the December 11th Schellville workday successful:

Garrett Brisbee, Scott Bowdish, Nico Dacong, David Waterman, Seth Adams, and Steve Coon.

At the Victory Station Yard worksite:

  1. The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been set at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf.
  2. Focus on stripping, repairing, and painting the roof of #141 Oakland Business Car.   Good progress made by David Waterman, but more work is still required.
  3. Prepare the dining room ceiling of the #141 Oakland for painting.  Good progress made by Nico Dacong, but more work will be needed.
  4. Clean and organize the diesel shop car.  Excellent progress made by Steve Coon, David Waterman, and Nico Dacong.
  5. The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been taken down at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf.

At the Sonoma Rail worksite in Schellville:

1.           Focus on bringing #3720 or #3722 up to operational status.     In progress by Seth Adams, Garrett Brisbee, Scott Bowdish and Jim Prettyleaf.

2.           Select the gallery car with the least number of problems and concentrate on bringing it up to operational status.  In progress by Seth Adams, Garrett Brisbee, and Jim Prettyleaf.

3.           Defer all work on the #3714 gallery car until a later date.  Done, this is now the current plan of record.

4.           Charge the dead 32-volt battery in #3720.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf.

5.           Start the 3-71 diesel engine for #3720’s generator set and run for sufficient time to determine if removal of the thermostat has fixed the high operating temp problem.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf, under lighting load conditions the gen-set’s diesel now operates at 140°F.  When the electric resistance heaters in #3720 are turned on for roughly 1 hour the diesel gen set’s coolant temp slowly increased and stabilized at 160°F.

6.           Continue working on the air conditioning system of #3720 and #3722 per the written plan submitted by Seth Adams.  On temporary hold, Seth Adams worked on testing the electric resistance heaters.

7.           Vacuum out the air conditioning system for #3722 and refill with oil and R134A refrigerant if no leaks have been detected.  On temporary hold, we are working on the electric heaters first.

8.           Test the electric resistance heaters in #3722.  Done, Seth Adams verified that all of the heaters in #3722 work correctly and Jim Prettyleaf verified that the gen-set’s diesel engine coolant temperature stabilizes at 170°F after pulling the 20 kilo Watt heater load for roughly 1 hour.

9.           Test the electric resistance heaters in #3720.  In progress, Seth Adams verified that the high-range heaters in #3720 work correctly but the low range heater for the north end of #3720 has a faulty power contactor.  Jim Prettyleaf verified that the gen-set’s diesel engine stabilized at 160°F after pulling the high-range heater load for roughly 1 hour.  Jim Prettyleaf and Seth Adams are working together to locate an equivalent replacement power contactor since we have already determined that the original equipment Cutler-Hammer power contactor is obsolete and no longer available.

10.       Continue vacuuming out the overhead compartment for #3720’s blowers.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

11.       Continue the work needed to put air tool oil into sticky air powered door motors.  In progress by Jim Prettyleaf and Garrett Brisbee.  As requested, the bowls underneath the air shut off valves were removed and filled with air tool oil, but we still need to verify if this remedy provides adequate lubrication.

12.       Repair the broken braided steel cable that controls the doorway occupied sensor switch in the pneumatically operated door at the south end of #3722.  In progress, Jim Prettyleaf disassembled the rubber boot attached to the leading edge of the sliding door located at the south end of #3722 and confirmed that this problem was caused by a broken crimp connection to the sensor switch’s stainless steel control cable.  Jim Prettyleaf will work with Jay King to make the necessary repairs.

13.       Install the good sink cannibalized from #3714 into #3722’s restroom.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

14.       Locate the source of the leaks in #3720’s and #3722’s water tanks.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

15.       Inspect #3720 and #3722 and make a list of any parts that are missing, broken or inoperable.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

16.       Continue examining and make a written record of the repairs needed for the #3720 and 3722 gallery car’s CO2 fire systems prior to upcoming visit from AAA Fire Suppression Services.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

17.       Repair the broken sink that was removed from #3722.  Owner Garrett Brisbee.

18.       Complete the installation of the new truck center pin covers.  In progress, the owner is Jay King.

19.       Manufacture and install replacements for the broken arm rests.  In progress, the owner is Jay King.

20.       Gallery car window shade refurbishing and cleaning.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.

21.       Wash the seats in the #3722 and #3720 gallery cars.  In progress by Scott Bowdish, the seats that have been washed are looking great.

22.       Gallery car seat repairs, reupholstering, and cushion swapping.  In progress, by Garrett Brisbee and Scott Bowdish.  Good seats are being borrowed from the #3714 gallery car to replace torn or stained seats in the #3722 and #3720 gallery cars.

23.       Start preparing the gallery cars for painting.  No action taken during the Dec 11th workday.
