Progress report for the December 28, 2021 mid-week GGRM workday at Schellville

 The December 28th mid-week GGRM workday was focused on the following items at the Victory Station Yard and the Sonoma Rail storage site at Schellville.

 

The primary emphasis is on completion of the tasks needed to get the GGRM’s passenger cars ready for operation.

Below is the progress report for the Saturday’s December 28, 2021 workday.

 

At the Victory Station Yard worksite:

  1. The GGRM EIC is required to send a text to NWPCo General Manager Ryan Martin when flag and derail protection has been set at the Victory Station Yard and the north leg of the Schellville wye.  Done, Jim Prettyleaf
  2. Hand off all the materials needed to build a replica partition for the #5901 RPO car to Scott Bowdish.  Everything needed make a new partition is now stored in the container at Schellville, but handoff to Scott Bowdish was not completed.  
  3. Weather permitting continue stripping, repairing, and painting the roof of the #141 Oakland Business Car.  No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday because the weather was too cold, and too wet.
  4. Weather permitting reinstall all of the freshly rebuilt 24RL air brake controls on to GP9 #3194.  Done by Steve Coon.  The next step is to make final adjustments and check functionality.
  5. Install the new LED lighting on the #141 Oakland.  Work is in progress by Nico Dacong and Tim Dulin, roughly 60% of Oakland’s incandescent lighting has been replaced by new LED lamps.
  6. Install the new 240-volt to 24-volt control power transformer needed to get the baseboard heaters in the #2979 tavern lounge car working again. Smoked two 240-volt to 24-volt control power transformers while investigating this problem.  The symptoms indicate that there is short circuit in the 24-volt control wiring for the tavern car’s heaters.  Additional troubleshooting will be needed to track down the location of this short circuit.

At the Sonoma Rail worksite in Schellville:

1.           Continue to defer all work on the #3714 gallery car until a later date.  Done. 

2.           Continue the work needed to select the gallery car with the least number of problems and concentrate on bringing #3720 or #3722 up to operational status.  Work is progressing along several fronts. 

3.           Refill the nitrogen bottle that is currently stored in #3722.  Done by Jim Prettyleaf, a full nitrogen bottle is stored in #3722.  

4.           Continue working on the air conditioning system of #3720 and #3722 per the written plan submitted by Seth Adams.  On temporary hold, we are working on the electric heaters first. 

5.           Vacuum out the air conditioning system for #3722 and refill with oil and R134A refrigerant if no leaks have been detected.  On temporary hold, we are working on the electric heaters first. 

6.           Repair the broken braided steel cable that controls the doorway occupied sensor switch for the pneumatically operated door at the south end of #3722.  Work is in progress, owners Jim Prettyleaf and Jay King. 

7.           Repair or replace the faulty power contactor for #3720’s north end low range electric resistance heater.  Done, the electric resistance heaters in #3720 and #3722 are now fully functional thanks to Seth Adams. 

8.           Install the good sink cannibalized from #3714 into #3722’s restroom.  No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday.   

9.           Locate the source of the leaks in #3720’s and #3722’s water tanks.  Work is in progress by Steve Rusconi. 

10.       Repair the broken sink that was removed from #3722.  Owner Garrett Brisbee. 

11.       Inspect #3720 and #3722 and make a list of any parts that are missing, broken or inoperable.  No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday.

12.       Continue examining and make a written record of the repairs needed for the #3720 and 3722 gallery car’s CO2 fire systems prior to upcoming visit from AAA Fire Suppression Services. No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday.

13.       Complete the installation of the new truck center pin covers.  Work is in progress, owner Jay King.      

14.       Manufacture and install replacements for the broken arm rests.  Work is in progress, owner Jay King. 

15.       Continue vacuuming and washing seats in the #3720 and the #3722 cars.  In progress, Garrett Brisbee mopped the lower floor at the north end of #3720, but more cleaning is needed.

16.       Gallery car window shade refurbishing and cleaning.  No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday. 

17.       Start preparing the gallery cars for painting.  No action taken during the Dec 28, 2021 workday. 

18.       Measure the dimension of the end of train bracket welded to the south end of the #3714 gallery car.  Done, Jim Prettyleaf will forward these dimensions to Jay King.
